Resolutions and File Types

Scanning and preparation of graphics is one of the most important things to understand before commencing work. You can avoid a lot of extra work and unneccessary expense if you check out the information below - FIRST!

All greyscale or colour illustrations should be a minimum of 300 dpi (preferred 350dpi) resolution (dpi means dots per inch and is basically the same as pixels per inch)
Line illustrations should be a minimum of 800 dpi. (or 1000 dpi maximum).

     There is no benefit in using higher resolutions than the above, even though most scanners can , as the only difference you will see using higher settings will be in the file size. Film output quality is optimum at the above resolutions.

All colours used in files for printing must be CYMK. - see the COLOUR info here  

     We cannot be responsible for below par results if you supply low-res or RGB images.

All graphic files should be supplied as separate files from the DTP or Word documents even where they are actually embedded in the document. We often need to convert or adjust the graphics and cannot easily do so with embedded graphics.
  • Please note: If you supply JPEGs, these should be maximum quality, any others are lossy, that is the quality of image deteriorates in order to gain a smaller file size.
  • Whatever type of graphic file is supplied we actually convert in PhotoShop either to TIFF (or sometimes EPS) for printing.
  • We can use TIFF, EPS, JPEG, PDF, Gif, BMP, PCX, PICT file, PICT Resource, PIXAR, PNG, Amiga IFF, or Targa etc. If in doubt contact Pagefast FIRST!

We can accept Press optimised PDF files with fonts embedded as long as you follow the simple guidelines here when creating the pdf - see PDFs page for more information
